ORION LIGHTS UP SOUTH EAST QUEENSLAND - December 2009

Orion Solar LightingSE Queensland Councils are turning to Gold Coast company, Orion Solar to provide pathway and car park lighting for areas that are difficult or expensive to supply with grid powered electricity. Orion supplies a range of solar powered LED lighting which operate without electrical wiring, do not require electricians for the installation, have no running costs and are almost maintenance free.

Moreton Regional Council has installed 19 EverGEN solar powered area lights for a series of pathways on Bribie Island. The lighting project included LED luminaires, solar engines, poles and installation. LEDs are used because they use less energy for the same amount of light produced by traditional lighting. One of the reasons that Orion was chosen as the supplier was the fact that the EverGEN lights combine solar panel, batteries and electronic controls in one attractive pole mounted housing.

Toowoomba Regional Council manages a community sports club in a rural area about 15km South of Toowoomba. The Hodgsonvale Sports Club had lights for the clubhouse and the tennis courts but security was a concern because the car park and the footpaths were unlit. Providing hard wired power was a problem without trenching or the addition of more power poles.

The Council turned to Orion Solar for a solar powered lighting solution which would meet their needs and meet the lighting requirements of Australian standards. By selecting Orion Solar as the supplier, the benefits to the Council were that no electrical wires had to be laid, electricians were not required for the installation, running costs will be zero and maintenance will be negligible. The light is provided by LEDs which means the lifetime of the units will be up to 25 years. The only maintenance to be expected would be to replace the batteries about once every five years.

Now Brisbane City Council has turned to Orion with an order for EverGEN solar powered lighting to illuminate various locations along the Kedron Brook Bikeway. As with all of Orion’s installations, Brisbane’s new lights will be environmentally friendly, relying 100% on renewable energy.

MAKING WAVES WITH A NEW GENERATION OF SOLAR LED MARINE LANTERN - November 2008

Orion Solar LightingFrom guiding vessels through San Francisco Bay to lighting the waters of Sydney Harbour, solar - powered LED lighting has revolutioinised marine operations around the world. With a bright, crisp light source visible from up to six nautical miles away, a self- contained solar LED lantern can replace an entire incandescent system and virtually eliminate ongoing maintenance requirements for up to five years. Deployed by coast guards, port authorities, marinas and navies around the world, solar LED (light emitting diode) technology has set the standard for a convenient, reliable and cost- effective alternative for illuminating aids-to-navigation systems.

New LED technology Canadian manufacturer Carmanah Technologies Corporation of Victoria, British Columbia, designed and built the first self- contained solar-powered LED lanterns more than a decade ago. Continual innovation and product development has resulted in a complete suite of solar LED lanterns, offering a range of capabilities, functions and visibilities that leverage the unique
benefits of combining solar technology with LEDs. Thanks to recent innovations, Carmanah is now making waves through applying the latest LED technology. Effectively doubling the raw lumen output of its previous optical assembly, the new LEDs enable a larger illumination area and smoother light gradient. The result is a solar-powered lighting application that is
brighter and more energy efficient than ever before. READ ARTICLE

ORION SOLAR TAKES AREA LIGHTING SOLUTIONS TO NEW HEIGHTS - October 2008

Orion Solar LightingSolar powered area lighting has been fraught with challenges up to now, unless the user was willing to use large solar arrays, install heavy batteries at ground level or compromise the light levels and autonomy that could be achieved. All that has changed with the launch of a new combination of solar power unit and LED luminaire by Orion Solar Pty Ltd.

Orion has been supplying solar powered lighting solutions for four years, using leading edge technology from Carmanah Technologies of Canada. Now Orion has launched EverGEN™, a combination of Carmanah’s self contained solar engine with THE EDGE™ luminaire to overcome all of these previous problems.

The Carmanah solar engine combines photovoltaic panels, rechargeable batteries, sensors and an energy management system in a compact and durable pole-mounted design. The secure enclosure protects against theft and vandalism and is designed to withstand extreme wind loads. The energy management system uses a sophisticated algorithm to dynamically adjust the relationship between light output and available energy resources. The result means that we can achieve peak performance from a smaller battery source while ensuring maximum periods without maintenance. Typically the only maintenance required will be to replace batteries after a period of 5-8 years.

THE EDGE luminaire was developed by Beta Lighting of the USA and is able to generate comparable lumens to traditional HID products by integrating the design of it’s LEDs, heat sinks, optical lenses and housing into one complete system. LED fixtures also have an environmental advantage in that they contain no mercury, last longer and produce less waste. Furthermore THE EDGE complies with both Dark Sky and Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHs) regulations.

The EverGEN combination of Carmanah’s solar engine and Beta Lighting’s luminaire was recently awarded the Judges' Citation Award at LIGHTFAIR International's "LFI Innovation Awards" in Las Vegas. This prestigious award was in a category encompassing exterior lighting products for roadway, sports, floodlight, outdoor architectural and site lighting applications.

The EverGEN solar lighting solution is easy to install, requiring no trenching or cabling, no electricians or contractors are required to perform the installation and the running costs are zero.

Orion Solar Pty Ltd is based on Queensland’s Gold Coast and supplies area lighting throughout Australia, New Zealand and the region. For more information call John Holliday on 07-5559-1666.

SUNSHINE COAST INSTALLS BOLLARDS FROM ORION

Orion Solar LightingOrion Solar Pty Ltd solar powered lights have virtually no maintenance and no running costs.

Orion’s bollards are ideally suited to areas where pedestrian walkways require illumination at night, thus increasing security and safety.

Sunshine Coast Regional Council recently installed 24 of Orion’s self contained solar powered bollards to illuminate areas throughout Noosa and the general northern portions of the Sunshine Coast.

Each bollard contains a Carmanah 601 solar LED light which has been field proven in rugged marine and military environments. The units were installed in minutes, requiring no trenching for power cables and the lights switch on automatically at dusk and off at dawn.

With virtually no maintenance and no running costs, Orion’s bollards are a fraction of the cost of traditional hard-wired electrical bollards. Sunshine Coast is currently looking to enhance safety and reduce costs by using Orion Solar Bollards in other projects around the area.

GOLD COAST AIRPORT INSTALLS TAXIWAY LIGHTS FROM ORION

Gold Coast Airport’s Electrical Supervisor Peter Dunn is very pleased with the new lighting and was impressed by how quickly they were up and running. He says they have had the local CASA representative out to review the lights who was satisfied that they meet with local safety requirements. The installation by Gold Coast Airport is indicative of what a lot of airports in Australia might do in the future.

Orion’s Sales Manager, Richard Holliday says, “Our lights are not just for the benefit of major airports. Remote airfields and emergency evacuation sites without available power can now be equipped with lighting.” In June, Orion supplied lights for the Orchard Beach airstrip on Fraser Island as well as remote activated helipad lighting for the Island. With the increasing numbers of tourists visiting Fraser and the commonly occurring accidents on the beach, the new lights will be a life saver. No remote airfield need now be without nighttime access just because they do not have a readily available power source.

Orion Solar has been supplying solar powered lighting solutions since 2004 and was a recent winner of a Gold Coast Business Excellence Award in the category of Emerging Business. READ ARTICLE

INCREASING SAFETY & CUTTING COSTS AT AUSTRALIAN MINING SITES.

Driving a 240 ton truck at 60 km/hour in the dark on a dirt road can be a dangerous business. When the road may change daily and pedestrians are in the vicinity, the danger multiplies many fold. Similar problems exist where pedestrians encounter railways, conveyors and machinery at industrial sites all over Australia.

Those are some of the challenges facing many mining and processing plant operators around Australia for which Orion Solar Pty Ltd has helped to provide solutions.

During 2006, the minerals and energy industry has been the largest market sector for Orion’s growing business and the demand is not slowing down.

Orion’s solar powered LED marking lights are unique in the world of safety, roadway, rail and hazard marking. They are rugged, requiring no maintenance and can be installed in minutes. They charge during the day, even in cloudy conditions and turn on automatically at night. Our 1 mile and 2 mile safety lights are frequently used to mark the correct route for trucks to negotiate, such as by Origin Energy at the Jingemla Oil Field in WA. Similar safety marking applications were installed during 2006 at the operations of Placer Dome, BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto.

Orion Solar Lights

Orion also supplies solar powered pedestrian crossing lights, either push button operated, with centralised control or automatic operation by motion sensor. Coal and Allied’s Mount Thorley Operations installed Orion’s R820C pedestrian crossings to improve safety at their open cut mine near Singleton. The R820C is engineered to operate reliably with no scheduled maintenance for up to 5 years.

Similar solar powered pedestrian crossing lights were supplied for use at the Alcan Gove bauxite and alumina refinery in Nhulunbuy in the Northern Territory.

QUEENSLAND COUNCIL CHOOSES ORION

Redland Shire Council has implemented two projects involving solar powered lighting to increase security of public walkways within it’s residential sub-divisions. Orion Solar Solutions had originally been appointed as a preferred supplier to the Council for supplying marine navigation lights for the Council’s waterways in Moreton Bay.

Council installed a total of 10 of Orion’s self contained solar powered bollards to illuminate a pathway through a park. Each bollard contains a Carmanah 601 solar LED light which has been field proven in rugged marine and military environments. The units were installed in minutes, requiring no trenching for power cables and the lights switch on automatically at dusk and off at dawn. With virtually no maintenance and no running costs, Orion’s bollards are a fraction of the cost of traditional hard wired electrical bollards. Redland Shire are looking to enhance safety and reduce costs by using Orion Solar Bollards in other projects around the Shire.

In another project, a GI-100 solar powered LED lighting system was installed to illuminate a public easement between a residential street and a shopping centre, previously frequented by local youths. The GI-100 includes a head unit with solar panel, batteries and electronics, interconnected to dual luminaires that can be mounted in a variety of positions. The GI-100 is frequently used to illuminate bus shelters, picnic sites and other outdoor facilities.

As with all of Orion’s solar lights, the GI-100s switch on and off automatically, require almost no maintenance, incur no running costs and are inexpensive to install. The lights are in use around the world, in many cases in latitudes where they receive only a few hours of sunlight each day.
